Elance.com is a fantastic site. If you have to pay for full membership, but you will get this money within their first job. It is a site for freelancers of all types of design, and are able to Bid on as many jobs as you feel able to do. Although technically not a temporary position, is strictly independent, but this will let you be very selective in the projects and name your own price … not what someone thinks you should do to their abilities.
