unemployment benefits california eligibility
Clarification to: Self employment vs unemployment benefits in California?
Earlier I posted a question regarding eligibility for unemployment if self employed? Many of you responded very informatively.
I failed to mention though that I was working for a company up until 8/20/08 until got laid off. but i purchased the business in 5/8/08. I should add that the business is a corporation with currently as me the sole owner but it will change. I bought the business for my sister and brother and i will have nothing to do with it in a few months. I plan on looking for work in my own line which is environmental compliance.
Also, that the business is going in debt by a few grand every month until business turns around.
Now! do you think I can claim unemployment in California?
Thank you
Z
If your employer is a corporation, and you have been paying yourself payroll, and paying employment taxes on your payroll, then you will qualify for unemployment, as long as you have been working there long enough (usually 12 – 18 months).
If you have not been paying employment taxes, or are not paying yourself a salary, then you don’t qualify.
